As a native of San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Karl Mitchell began his academic journey studying criminal justice as an undergraduate at The University of Texas San Antonio. After graduation, he transitioned to Norwich University, where he gained an interest in national and international issues, subsequently earning a master's degree in diplomacy and international conflict management. He also sought to become a licensed professional counselor, attending Texas A&M University-San Antonio to earn a second master's degree in counseling and guidance before achieving a Doctorate in Counselor Education from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

Mitchell wields more than 15 years of experience working within the mental health field, serving clients and communities from various populations. He aims to establish interventions for quality care of clients, communities and treatments to help eliminate misdiagnosis. As an assistant professor, he seeks to synthesize teaching, counseling and service with qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods research design. He is also interested in establishing a center for global service-learning and a global service-learning, wellness and justice institute.

Your Latest Project

I recently submitted a manuscript to the American Counseling Association‘s Counselor Education and Supervision journal, which is being considered for publication. If accepted, this will be my first journal article as an assistant professor at East Texas A&M. The title of the article is Developing Multicultural Competence and Social Justice Advocacy with Service-Learning Pedagogy.
